Habit Hound Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

Habit Hound is built by Goodwater Labs (“we,” “us,” “our”). If you have any questions about this policy or how Habit Hound handles your data, email us at support@goodwaterlabs.com.

This policy describes what data Habit Hound collects, where it goes, and the controls you have over it.

2. Summary

  • The list of habits, tasks, and apps you choose to block stays on your device. We never receive it.
  • Habit Hound sends a small amount of anonymous usage data to Firebase Analytics so we can understand which features are useful.
  • Apple’s Screen Time / Family Controls framework deliberately hides the identities of the apps you select. We could not see them even if we wanted to.

3. Data we collect

On-device only — never sent to us

The following data is stored exclusively on your device using Apple’s SwiftData and never transmitted to Goodwater Labs:

  • Habits, tasks, schedules, streaks, and completion history you create in Habit Hound.
  • Your Screen Time / Family Controls authorization status and the opaque app tokens representing the apps and categories you have chosen to block.
  • Your bypass history (when you unlocked a blocked app, for how long, and which habit cleared it).
  • Local preferences and onboarding state.

Deleting Habit Hound from your device deletes all of this data.

Sent to Firebase Analytics (Google)

Habit Hound uses Firebase Analytics to record anonymous, aggregated product analytics. These events help us understand how the app is used and where it falls short. We do not attempt to identify you, and the events do not contain the content of your habits or the names of apps you have selected to block.

The events we send include:

  • Lifecycle and feature events — app opens, onboarding step completions, habit creation, task completion, bypass attempts, paywall views, paywall conversions, settings changes, feature taps.
  • Device and environment metadata that Firebase attaches by default — device model, iOS version, app version, locale, and country (derived from IP and then discarded by Firebase).
  • Pseudonymous identifiers. Events carry a Firebase Installation ID (which resets when you reinstall the app) and a random anonymous identifier that Habit Hound generates on first launch. That random identifier is stored in the iOS Keychain, which Apple does not clear when an app is deleted — so it persists if you delete Habit Hound and install it again on the same device. It is not your Apple Account, not your device’s serial number, and not an advertising identifier; it is attached to no account and says nothing about you.
  • Purchase events. When a subscription is started, the analytics event includes which product was purchased (monthly or annual). It does not include payment details, which Apple never shares with us.

We do not send:

  • Habit names, task names, notes, or any other content you create.
  • App names or bundle identifiers obtained through Family Controls (Apple’s framework keeps these opaque even to us).
  • Your name, email address, or contact information.
  • Precise location.

4. Third parties

Habit Hound shares data with the following third parties only as described above.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers.

5. Apple Screen Time and Family Controls

Habit Hound uses Apple’s FamilyControls, ManagedSettings, and DeviceActivity frameworks to block apps. These frameworks are designed by Apple so that:

  • The list of apps and categories you select is represented to Habit Hound as opaque tokens. We cannot read the underlying bundle identifiers, app names, or icons in a form we could log or transmit.
  • Restriction state, activity monitoring, and shield logic run on your device. Habit Hound does not have a server that sees what you have blocked.
  • Authorization can be revoked at any time in Settings → Screen Time on your device.

We will never attempt to circumvent these protections.

6. Children’s privacy (COPPA)

Habit Hound is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, contact us at support@goodwaterlabs.com and we will delete it.

If Habit Hound is used on a device managed under Apple’s Family Sharing / Screen Time, the device owner controls authorization.

7. Your rights and controls

  • Delete all your data. Uninstall Habit Hound. iOS removes the app’s on-device database (habits, tasks, bypass history, preferences). There is nothing for us to delete on a server because we don’t store it. One exception: the anonymous identifier described in Section 3 lives in the iOS Keychain, which Apple does not clear on app deletion. To have the analytics events associated with it deleted, contact support@goodwaterlabs.com.
  • Opt out of analytics. Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements on your device and turn off Share with App Developers. Habit Hound respects this system-wide signal and will not send Firebase Analytics events while it is off.
  • GDPR (EEA / UK residents). Where GDPR applies, you have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or port your personal data, and to object to processing. Because the only data we hold is anonymous analytics keyed to pseudonymous identifiers, fulfilling most of these rights amounts to deleting the analytics events associated with your identifiers or opting out as above.   • CCPA / CPRA (California residents). We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under the CCPA / CPRA. You have the right to know, delete, and correct the personal information we hold about you, and the right to non-discrimination for exercising these rights. Contact support@goodwaterlabs.com.

8. Data retention

We retain Firebase Analytics events for the default retention period set on our Firebase project (currently 14 months), after which Google deletes them. Because all habit, task, and Screen Time data lives on your device, its retention is entirely up to you.

9. Security

We rely on Apple’s platform protections (sandboxing, on-device encryption when your device is locked) for data stored locally, and on Google’s infrastructure for analytics in transit and at rest. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, notify you inside the app. Continued use of Habit Hound after the changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
